HOW CAN I BECOME A PARTICIPANT ?
To be eligible, your entry must have been completed after January 1, 2024. You must also meet age and other guidelines listed on the National MIWW website.
Make a garment or a wearable accessory using wool fabrics, fibers or yarns. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving and felting are methods for creating your entry.
WHAT FABRICS/YARNS MAY I USE?
*100% wool or wool blend (minimum 60% wool or specialty wool fiber) for each fabric or yarn used. Specialty wool fibers include: alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna.
*The entire garment body (front, back and sleeves) must be wool or wool blend fabric. Vests worn as a top layer or without a coat/jacket must have a wool back. Vests worn with a suit, sport coat, or blazer may have a back of non-wool fabric.
*Trims, facings, interfacings, linings, and underlinings may be fabrics other than wool or wool blends.
TESTING WOOL FABRICS/YARNS
All wool fabrics/yarns for Junior, Senior, and Adult categories must be tested by NC MIWW Director Jean Thomas prior to the state competition. Testing is optional for Pre-Teens, Wearable Accessories and Made for Others.
Juniors, Seniors, and Adults
*Test a sample of your fabric/yarn before you purchase the fabric or cut out your garment.
*Use a glass or ceramic bowl and place 6oz. of fresh Clorox in the glass/bowl. Place a 1 ½ in. square of fabric or 12 in. piece of yarn in the Clorox. The fabric/yarn will dissolve in the Clorox solution usually in a few hours (at most 24 hours) depending on the weight of the fabric. Any remaining fibers are not wool. If the remaining seems half the size of the original, the percentage is less that the 60% wool required. Your garment will not qualify to compete at the National Competition. Choose another fabric.
STATE TESTING -- Send a 5x5 inch sample of each fabric to be tested and a 36-inch sample of each yarn to be tested. There is a $7.00 fee for each fabric/yarn tested. Please include the fiber contents listed on the fabric bolt and/or yarn band. Make check or money order payable to Jean Thomas, 3029 McLaughlin Lane, Charlotte, NC 28269. Jean will contact you with the results after the testing is completed.
WHAT KIND OF PATTERN MAY I USE?
You may use commercial patterns, or you may use an original pattern of your own design.
HELPFUL ADVICE
*Start planning now for entering the competition. You may find special prices on wool fabrics in late winter and early spring.
*Test fabric/yarn before starting your entry. Folks have purchased fabrics from very reputable stores that was mislabeled prior to being shipped to the store. The error was discovered when fabric was tested after the entry was completed. The contestant was permitted to come to the state competition but could not compete at the National MIWW.
*Purchase and extra 1/8 yard of your chosen fabric(s). This will assure that you have enough fabric for the test sample and for the national and state entry forms. All contestants must send an entry form to both the national and to the state competition.
